BYUH, UHH off to 3-0 starts in volleyball

Losaline Faka'osi had 16 kills and 18 digs as Brigham Young-Hawai'i defeated Cal State-East Bay, 25-20, 20-25, 25-22, 25-22, last night in the Aqua Hotels & Resorts Hawai'i Invitational at Cannon Activities Center.

Tanza Buroker added eight kills and four blocks, Camille Soto had 19 digs and Lacey Laycock registered 42 assists and three blocks for the Seasiders (3-0).

Sukhjit Athwal had 23 kills and Lauren Massa 24 digs for the Pioneers (0-4).

OTHER MATCHES

  • Freshman outside hitter Kylee Nawahine amassed 17 kills as Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat Adelphi (N.Y.), 23-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-20, yesterday afternoon at Cannon Activities Center.

    Losaline Faka'osi had 14 kills and 18 digs and Tanza Buroker added seven kills and five blocks for the Seasiders.

    Lacey Laycock registered 46 assists, Melanie Manutai added 16 digs and Keisha Moeai had 11 digs for BYUH.

    Audrey Goss led Adelphi with eight kills.

  • Fabiane Seben had 15 kills, hitting for a .579 average, as Hawai'i-Hilo beat Montana State-Billings, 25-14, 25-18 and 25-21, yesterday at McCabe Gym.

    "We played pretty well," said UHH head coach Bruce Atkinson, whose team improved to 3-0. "We were able to stay aggressive throughout the match and play hard both on and off the net."

    With Katie Swenson spreading the offense, middle hitter Seben hit 15 for 19 with four errors. Outside hitters Josimara Pinheiro and Kawena Cubi-Otineru each added 10 kills.

    Swenson recorded 42 assists while Pinheiro contributed 12 digs.

  • Kelly Balanay had 16 kills and Julia Gruszecka 12 as Hawai'i Pacific beat Adelphi (N.Y.), 25-14, 21-25, 25-15, 27-25, last night at St. Andrew's Priory gym.

    Tricia Yoshimura added 18 digs and Gruszecka 14 for the Sea Warriors (2-1).

    Kelsey Hackett had 11 kills and Hilary Pavels added 10 kills and 11 digs for Adelphi (2-2).

  • Devon Crotteau hammered 18 kills as Montana State-Billings beat Chaminade, 17-25, 12-25, 25-20, 25-18, 15-10, last night at McCabe Gym.

    Hillary Morrison had 39 assists for the Yellowjackets (2-2).

    Courtney Lorusso had 13 kills and 17 digs, Kylee Pedro added 12 kills and 10 digs, and Tanya Alvino contributed 47 assists for the Silverswords (1-2).

    U.S. SWEEPS SERBIA

    Three players from Honolulu helped the United States boys youth national team sweep Serbia, 25-17, 25-18, 25-18, yesterday in the second round of pool play at the FIVB Boys Youth (19-under) World Championship in Jesolo, Italy.

    Opposite Joshua Taylor (Ku'ikahi Volleyball Club, Punahou), who played the first and third sets, scored five points on four kills and one block. Outside hitter Taylor Crabb (Outrigger, Punahou), who played just the third set, had three points on three kills. Setter Micah Christenson (Outrigger Canoe Volleyball Club, Kamehameha), who played all three sets, had two points on one kill and one ace.

    BYUH WOMEN WIN

    Junior forward Emily Mearns scored two goals within a two-minute period in the first half as host Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat Westminster (Utah), 2-1, yesterday in a non-conference women's match.

    Sophomore Margaret Sekona assisted on each of Mearns' goals as the Seasiders improved to 2-0.

    Corie Walch put Westminster ahead 1-0 with a long goal at the 12:38 mark.

  • Charles Thompson scored in the 71st minute as Chaminade opened its season with a 1-0 victory over Upper Iowa yesterday in a non-conference men's match at Saint Louis Field.

  • Shaina Marnell and Valeria Ptasinki each scored two goals as visiting Upper Iowa beat Chaminade, 7-1, yesterday in a non-conference women's match at Saint Louis Field. Marissa Faye scored for the Silverswords (0-1).

  • Aza Gomez scored in the 84th minute as Cal State Los Angeles edged Hawai'i-Hilo, 2-1, yesterday in a season-opening men's match in Los Angeles. Eduardo Gutierrez scored a goal and Ivan Mercado made eight saves for the Vulcans.
