'Iolani scores winning TD as time expires

Advertiser Staff

Kevin Barayuga caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Jarrett Arakawa as time expired yesterday to lift 'Iolani to a pulsating 23-21 nonleague victory over Kapolei at Eddie Hamada Field.

The defending Division II state champion Raiders improved to 2-1; the Hurricanes fell to 1-2.

Kapolei took a 21-17 lead with 1:06 remaining on Noah Pascua's 19-yard TD pass to Donnie King and Eric Morales' extra point. But 'Iolani went 71 yards in 10 plays after the ensuing kickoff, capped by Arakawa's quick throw to Barayuga on an out pattern to the right side.

"The play was run for him to get open," said Arakawa, a senior who completed 22 of 37 passes for 222 yards and one touchdown and ran for another TD. "That's what we always play for — to do it with the game on the line."

The game featured several big plays from the opening kickoff, which was fumbled by the Hurricanes to give the Raiders possession at the Kapolei 32. On first down, Arakawa launched a touchdown pass to Trevyn Tulonghari and Andrew Skalman's extra point put 'Iolani up, 7-0, just 12 seconds into the game.

Kapolei came right back, scoring just four plays later on Onosai Faumuina's 3-yard TD run and tying it on Morales' PAT. The Hurricanes then took a 14-7 lead with 2:24 left in the first quarter after Brandon Vaitautolu's 35-yard touchdown scamper.

The Raiders cut it to 14-10 three minutes into the second quarter on Skalman's 24-yard field goal, then took a 17-14 lead with 7:04 remaining in the third quarter after Arakawa's 7-yard TD on a keeper to the right side.
