Former swim champ Fraser, 71, fights off attacker

Associated Press

NOOSAVILLE, Australia — Dawn Fraser, who won swimming gold medals at three Olympics, fought off and helped capture a man who tried to rob her home north of Brisbane.

The 71-year-old Fraser said Monday the man grabbed her but she fought back.
“This guy came out of the gate and grabbed me and I grabbed him by the ear and I kicked him in the groin,” she told several Australian television stations.
“So he had to let me go. He threatened my life and I got really annoyed about that and just grabbed him by the ear and the hair.”
She said a male friend made the man lie on his stomach until police arrived on Sunday.
Fraser won eight Olympic medals, including four golds, and held the 100-meter freestyle world record from 1956 to 1972. She won the 100 free at the 1956, 1960 and 1964 Olympics.
