The candidates to fill the void left by the injury to Brigham Young-Hawai'i's Lucas Alves, the Pacific West Conference Preseason Player of the Year, has become an international affair.

Alves, a 6-foot-9, 230-pound senior forward, is a two-time PacWest Player of the Year, but is expected to be out with a knee injury until next month. In his absense, the Seasiders won a pair of games over Oakland City (Ind.) last week to open their season.

"I thought Saturday was the first time we played well," BYUH coach Ken Wagner said. "For whatever reason we hadn't played well defensively, but it takes us a while generally to get going defensively because we try to play a help-team defense."

Sophomore guard Tsung-Hsien "Jet" Chang led BYUH in scoring both nights. Chang, who is 6 foot 4, 190 pounds and from Yilan, Taiwan, had 22 points in Wednesday's 85-78 win and 26 in Saturday's 102-67 rout. Junior Marques Whippy, a 6-foot-5, 215-pound guard from Bua, Fiji, averaged 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists for the Seasiders.

"(Chang) really did a good job Saturday," Wagner said. "He had an excellent game."

Wagner added Whippy is "probably the best rebounder in the country but we just have to make sure he stays out of foul trouble."

BYUH hits the road for a single game at Western Oregon tomorrow and two games at the Seattle Pacific Tournament this weekend.

Hawai'i-Hilo forward Justin Smith, a senior from Los Angeles, has been named the Pacific West Conference men's basketball Player of the Week.
