O'Neill World Cup of Surfing is on; wave faces at 20 to 30 feet

Advertiser Staff

The O'Neill World Cup of Surfing will resume today in challenging conditions at Sunset Beach.

The remainder of the third round and start of the fourth round will run today. The competition is scheduled to run from 8:30 a.m. to around 4:30 p.m.

Wave-face heights are in the 20- to 30-foot range, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a high surf warning until 4 p.m. The swell is expected to peak this morning and diminish through tonight.

Hawai'i surfers scheduled to compete today include Sunny Garcia, Pancho Sullivan, Kekoa Bacalso, Dusty Payne, Mason Ho and Flynn Novak. World title contenders Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson — both from Australia — are also scheduled to surf today.

A high surf warning means that dangerous waves will pound the shoreline, resulting in dangerous swimming conditions and rip curents.
