Highway will be closed on Sunday night, officials warn

Advertiser Staff

The state Department of Transportation canceled last night's scheduled closing of Kalaniana'ole Highway in Makapu'u because of equipment problems, and added a work period for overnight Sunday.

The state on Nov. 29 began nighttime closures of the highway for much-needed retaining wall work between the Makapu'u Lookout parking lot and the Makapu'u Beach Park parking entrance. The $7.8 million project is expected to be completed by fall 2010.

The night work will resume tonight, beginning at 9:30 and continuing until 5:30 a.m. tomorrow. Construction was to be halted Friday and resume in January, but state officials said work will continue from 9:30 p.m. Sunday to 5:30 a.m. Monday.

Motorists are advised to use caution while driving through the work area.
