Despite a drop in wave heights today, city lifeguards made one rescue and nearly 1,000 “preventative actions” to keep people out of 10- to 15-foot waves today.

The rescue occurred at 9:58 a.m. at Sunset Beach Park.
Lifeguards responded to several surfers in distress off of Sunset Point near the surfing area known as Phantoms, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city’s emergency services department.
“Lifeguards, along with the assistance of the Hawaiian Water Patrol (who were in the nearby area) were able to ensure all surfers made it to the beach safely,” Cheplic said in a statement. “Further medical attention was not required.”
“With the declining swell today, there were much more people in the water resulting in the lifeguards having to conduct a higher number of rescues and assists,” Cheplic said. “Ocean Safety personnel want to remind the public that there is a larger and potentially dangerous swell set to arrive later tonight into tomorrow so everyone should take the necessary precautions to protect life and property.”
