UConn wins its seventh to earn bowl bid

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. — Dave Teggart kicked a 42-yard field goal as time expired and Connecticut beat South Florida, 29-27, last night, finishing a season marred by tragedy with three consecutive wins.

UConn (7-5, 3-4 Big East) drove 31 yards in six plays to set up the kick by Teggart, who had a field goal blocked earlier in the quarter.

Zach Frazer threw for 225 yards and two touchdowns, completing 20 of 30 passes in a light but steady snow.

B.J. Daniels ran for three touchdowns for South Florida (7-5, 3-4), including a score that gave the Bulls a 27-26 lead with just 40 seconds to play.

USF, which started the season 5-0, finished with five losses in its last seven games.

Both teams are expected to receive bowl bids.

BUTLER 28, CENTRAL CONNECTICUT STATE 23

Quarterback Andrew Huck ran for three touchdowns to lead the host Bulldogs (11-1) over the Blue Devils (9-3) in the Gridiron Classic, which matches the champions of the Pioneer Football League and the Northeast Conference.

Huck rushed only nine times for 41 yards but made his carries count. His scoring runs covered 10, 19 and 7 yards. He also completed 15 of 21 passes for 182 yards. Scott Gray, who rushed 15 times for 88 yards, scored Butler's other TD on a 2-yard run.

TEXAS SOUTHERN 30, SOUTHERN 25

Joseph Anderson caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Arvell Nelson with 39 seconds left, lifting the host Tigers (6-5, 5-2 SWAC) over the Knights (6-5, 3-4).

Texas Southern held Southern to a three-and-out to get the ball on its own 49-yard line with 55 seconds left. Nelson hit Anderson for 15 yards and Andrew Thomas for 22 before finding Anderson for the game-winner. Nelson completed 20 of 38 passes for 241 yards.

FLORIDA ATLANTIC 28, FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL 21

Alfred Morris rushed for 158 yards and two four-quarter touchdowns, and also caught an 8-yard pass for another TD as the host Owls (5-7, 5-3 Sun Belt Conference) rallied past the Golden Panthers (3-9, 3-5).

Morris captured the Sun Belt Conference rushing title for 2009. He finished the season with 1,392 yards as the Owls defeated the Panthers for the seventh time in eight meetings.

WILLIAM & MARY 24, SOUTHERN ILLINOIS 3

Jonathan Grimes ran for 133 yards and three touchdowns, helping the visiting Tribe (11-2) snap the Salukis' (11-2) 11-game winning streak to advance to the semifinals of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs against Villanova.

VILLANOVA 46, NEW HAMPSHIRE 7

Angelo Babbaro ran for 148 yards and two touchdowns, and the host Wildcats (12-1) held New Hampshire (10-3) without a first down until 6:31 left in third quarter to advance to the quarterfinals.

MONTANA 51, STEPHEN F. AUSTIN 0

Andrew Selle threw for three touchdowns and ran for another, and the host Grizzlies (13-0) took advantage of 10 turnovers by the Lumberjacks (10-3) to reach the semifinals against Appalachian State.

APPALACHIAN STATE 35, RICHMOND 31

Armanti Edwards threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Matt Cline with 10 seconds to play, lifting the visiting Mountaineers (11-2) over the defending FCS champion Spiders (11-2).
