High surf closes 2 Maui beaches

Advertiser Staff

County Parks and Recreation officials closed the Baldwin and Hookipa beach parks on the North Shore of Maui around 8:30 a.m. today. County officials said in a news release that dangerously high surf and shore breaks are posing unsafe conditions.

County ocean safety officers, park rangers and Department of Land and Natural Resources enforcement personnel are continuing to monitor beach parks exposed to today's high surf.

Maui and Molokai's north- and west-facing shores are under a high-surf warning. Dangerous and battering waves are expected to pound shorelines with dangerous swimming conditions and deadly rip currents.

Officials advise spectators watching the high surf to remain far from the water where waves can suddenly wash up onto previously dry areas.

The public is asked to follow directions from ocean safety personnel.
