One professional surfer at Waimea Bay was taken to a hospital in serious condition after a surf-related injury today, said city emergency services spokesman Bryan Cheplic.

The incident happened around 9:30 a.m.
Cheplic said the man appeared to be in his 40s and was able to paddle himself in to the shorebreak where lifeguards assisted him.
EMS crews then treated and transported the man to a local-area hospital.
