‘Body’ in the surf off Waianae beach turns out to be a seal

With huge waves pounding the North Shore and the West Side beaches experiencing a wrap-around effect, even a seal got into the act of enjoying a little ocean recreation.

Police received a report a little past noon today of a body being tossed around in the surf in an area known as “Sewers Beach” in Waianae.
“Apparently the call to HPD was relayed to us,” said fire Capt. Terry Seelig.
Two fire department crew from the Waianae station were sent to the scene and determined that the body was a seal, which was alive and well, and “body-suring in the waves,” Seelig said.
A Fire Department helicopter was en route to the Waianae scene, when it was learned that the Waianae incident involved a seal.
The chopper was then rerouted to an area offshore from Ke Iki Beach on the North Shore where two simmers of the human kind were reported to be in distress.
The two made it two shore by the time the helicopter arrived, Seelig said.
