Advertiser Staff

Police said a 66-year-old Federal Way, Wash., woman died after she was heard calling for help while swimming in the ocean off Ka'anapali on Saturday night, the Maui News reported.

The woman had gone into the ocean alone in the area fronting the Aston Maui Ka'anapali Villas after 6:30 p.m., said police Capt. Charles Hirata, commander of the Lahaina Patrol District.

He said that someone heard the woman yelling for help in an area where there is a strong current.

After she was found on shore, efforts were made to revive her, Hirata said.

The woman was pronounced dead at Maui Memorial Medical Center.
