Australia's Gilmore clinches Triple Crown of Surfing with Honolua Bay win

Advertiser Staff

Australia's Stephanie Gilmore won her second consecutive Vans Triple Crown of Surfing championship by winning the Billabong Pro Maui contest for the third consecutive year today.

The final day of the Billabong Pro Maui women's contest was completed today in 8- to 12-foot waves at Honolua Bay, Maui.

Gilmore dominated the day, winning her quarterfinal, semifinal and final heats in convincing fashion.

She defeated Peru's Sofia Mulanovich in the final, 18.0-10.17.

Gilmore won a total of $37,000 — $12,000 for the contest victory, and $25,000 for the "Vans Triple Crown Triple Threat" bonus.

The victory capped another successful year for Gilmore. She clinched her third consecutive women's world championship last month at Sunset Beach.
Hawai'i surfers Coco Ho and Melanie Bartels were eliminated in the quarterfinals.

Kaua'i's Alana Blanchard, who was leading the Triple Crown standings entering the Maui contest, was eliminated in the third round. Punahou School senior Carissa Moore, who was also in Triple Crown contention, was also eliminated in the third round.
