5 a.m. fireworks show kicking off Honolulu Marathon to be twice as long

Advertiser Staff

The 5 a.m. pyrotechnics display at Sunday’s 37th Honolulu Marathon will be twice as long as in past years, race officials said today.

The show is being produced by Fireworks by Grucci and will last four minutes as the marathoners begin their 26.2-mile trek from the corner of Ala Moana and the Queen Street extension.
David Monti, the world-traveling editor of Race Results Weekly, said the Honolulu Marathon is the only one in the world that begins with a fireworks display.
More than 23,000 marathoners and 3,000 walkers plan to participate.
Meanwhile, the Waikiki Shell is hosting about 7,500 people today for the largest catered event in Hawaii — 500 pounds of rainbow pasta, 600 pounds of spaghetti with 120 gallons of marinara sauce, 1,250 pounds of chicken, 1,000 pounds of mahi, 800 pounds of tossed salad and 1,000 pounds of pineapple.
The Honolulu Marathon Luau/Concert will be held at 4 p.m. followed by entertainment from Jake Shimabukuro and Cecilio and Kapono.
