Minor fire reported at McCully high-rise

Advertiser Staff

A small appliance fire caused minor damage to a McCully-area high-rise apartment this morning.

Fire Capt. Terry Seelig said the fire was contained to a stacked washer and dryer in a unit on the fourth floor of the Ala Wai Manor at 620 McCully St.
Seelig said four people live in the apartment but only one of them, a woman, was home when the fire broke out.
The fire was reported at 9:34 a.m., was deemed under control at 10:07 a.m. and was declared extinguished at 10:13 a.m.
Seelig said firefighters first used a handheld extinguisher on the fire, which was smoldering inside the dryer, and then had to move the stacked machine “out of its nook” and go in through the back of the dryer to extinguish the fire.
“The flames and heat never got outside of the machine,” Seelig said.
Damage was estimated at $5,000 to the structure, mostly due to smoke, and $1,000 to the washer-dryer.
