Washington Place opens for holiday event

Advertiser Staff

Reservations between the hours of 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. are required for the event celebrating a tradition begun at Washington Place 151 years ago. The tradition of the “Christmas Tree” and celebration of Christmas in family homes in Hawaii owes its origins to Mary Dominis, widow of Captain John Dominis who built Washington Place.
A $5 donation to the Washington Place Foundation is suggested for adults. Proceeds go toward preservation and programs for the historic home. Please call early to make your reservations (586-0248). The deadline for reservations is Thursday.
The St. Andrew’s Cathedral Choir, directed by John Renke, will perform Christmas music from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Harp music will also be played during the evening.
Visitors will take a guided stroll though the 162-year-old home to learn more about the occasion on Christmas Eve in 1858 that sparked the time-honored custom in Hawaii.
All adult guests may be required to present a picture ID upon entrance to the property and may be subject to a bag inspection. Free parking will be available at the Department of Health parking lot.
