Honolulu Symphony musicians to give free holiday concert

by Advertiser staff

The musicians of the now bygone Honolulu Symphony will keep a holiday tradition this year despite recent financial difficulties that last month brought the symphony to an indefinite halt.

The members of the symphony will present a free concert of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 27 at the Blaisdell Concert Hall.
The concert was included in the symphony’s original season schedule for the 2009-2010 season. The symphony canceled its current season after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in early November.
Honolulu Symphony musicians, though now decidedly symphony-less, continue to perform together for select community shows.
The Beethoven’s No. 9, as performed by the 64-piece orchestra and the Oahu Chorus Society, will be conducted by Maestra JoAnn Falletta.
Tickets are required for the free concert and are available at the Blaisdell Concert Hall box office by calling 591-2211. Donations for the tickets are encouraged.
