The city Department of Parks and Recreation is scheduled to remove a number of coconut palm trees today. The city said the palms all have serious decay and will be replaced where site conditions allow.

“We are removing these coconut palms because they are a safety hazard and have the potential of falling on people or properties,” said Lester Chang, director of the Department of Parks and Recreation, in a news release. “We will make every effort to replace them as part of our ongoing plan to preserve and improve the natural beauty of our parks.”
Chang said the trees have been evaluated by city arborists and they found that the potential of failure is significant and that the plants need to be removed.
Motorists are asked to remain alert as trucks and tree-pruning equipment will be used on roadways. Park visitors are also advised to pay attention as the palm-removal process presses forward. The locations for coconut palm removal are:
