No. 1 Kansas turns back Cal, 84-69

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Sherron Collins keyed a late surge to finish with 17 points and No. 1 Kansas overcame a rare quiet game from its bench to beat California, 84-69, last night.

Kansas (11-0) came into the game as one of the deepest teams in the country, with its reserves averaging 29.3 points per game.

Patrick Christopher had 21 points for Cal (6-4).

No. 2 Texas 79, No. 9 Michigan State 68: Damion James had 23 points and 13 rebounds, leading the host Longhorns (11-0) past the Spartans (9-3).

No. 4 Purdue 90, SIU-Edwardsville 63: JaJuan Johnson scored 16 points and E'Twaun Moore added 15, powering the host Boilermakers (11-0) over the Cougars (2-10).

No. 5 Syracuse 92, Oakland, Mich. 60: Freshman guard Brandon Triche had a season-high 27 points in leading the host Orange (12-0) past the Golden Grizzlies (6-7).

No. 10 North Carolina 98, Marshall 61: Ed Davis had 19 points and the host Tar Heels (9-3) opened the second half with an 18-0 run to rout the Thundering Herd (9-2).

WAC

Portland 82, Idaho 52: Jared Stohl scored 30 points on a school-record 10 3-pointers to lead the host Pilots (7-4) over the Vandals (6-4). Idaho beat Portland, 68-48, Dec. 6 in Moscow, Idaho.

Utah State 83, Cal State-Fullerton 60: Tai Wesley scored 13 to lead the host Aggies (8-4) over the Titans (4-5) in the Basketball Travelers Invitational.

Louisiana Tech 81, Texas-Pan American 60: Kyle Gibson and Magnum Rolle scored 16 points apiece, leading the host Bulldogs (11-2) over the Broncs (1-12).

BYU 110, Nevada 104: Jimmer Fredette scored a career-high 33 points to lead the Cougars over the Wolf Pack in the second round of the Las Vegas Classic.

WOMEN

No. 4 Tennessee 89, San Francisco 34: Angie Bjorklund scored 19 points in 17 minutes and the visiting Lady Vols (10-1) bounced back from a loss to No. 2 Stanford on Sunday with a rout of the Dons (4-10).
