Obamas leave Bo behind

 • Timing of Obama's family vacation in Hawaii is 'perfect'

First dog Bo — a Portuguese water dog — will not be joining the Obama family on their trip to Hawai'i, according to the state Department of Agriculture.

As word of the president's visit spread, state veterinarian Dr. James Foppoli e-mailed the White House about Hawai'i's strict anti-rabies quarantine rules, said Janelle Saneishi, spokeswoman for the state Department of Agriculture.

A military liaison later told the department that Bo will not make the trip, Saneishi said.

Bo would have faced two options if he had come:

• 120 days in quarantine in the Agriculture Department's Hälawa facility, or quarantine for at least as long as the family was in the Islands.

• Two rounds of veterinarian-monitored rabies vaccinations and a blood test followed by a 120-day waiting period on the Mainland.
