Roosevelt's strong start too much for Moanalua

Roosevelt's defense helped build a big lead, but it wasn't enough.

With a lead in the 20s, head coach Hinano Higa and assistant Bobby Keanini barked and shouted reminders at their girls basketball team.

"We did our own (thing), but we have to learn to listen to them and play the defense the way we have to, or else were not going to be successful," said Roosevelt senior Mikela Thoemmes.

Thoemmes scored 33 points and her team's defense was at times suffocating in a 58-31 win over host Moanalua in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red East game last night.

"We're a defensive team, we practice defense all the time," said Thoemmes, whose team is 3-0. "It comes through in the game and I think that's where we're most effective is our defense. If we can hold the other team down, then it's really good."

Roosevelt's full-court press forced four turnovers on Moanalua's first four possessions , and the pressure remained throughout. Meanwhile, the Rough Riders scored the game's first 17 points, with Thoemmes accounting for 14 of them. The 5-foot-9 forward dominated inside the paint, posting up, flashing to the basket and converting putbacks.

"I couldn't have done it without my teammates," Thoemmes said. "I needed the passes and basically needed to get the rebounds to get the shots."

Moanalua's Jaiden Rego scored with 1:40 left in the first quarter to make it 17-2.

Nā Menehune's Jasmine Funtanilla hit back-to-back baskets to start the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 32-17 and forcing Roosevelt to call a timeout.

Nā Menehune (1-3) coach Kristie Morikawa said that deficit was doable for her team, but the Rough Riders scored the next eight points and her team is still learning to play without injured starter Joanna Nicolas.

"She was so much of the heart of the team that there's only so much you can do from the bench," Morikawa said. "We told them it's a good thing, they have to learn to do it on their own and that's what were struggling with now."

As the game wore on, the reminder was to focus on defense.

"We slacked off a little bit during the game so we have to work harder to keep the intensity up during the game," said Roosevelt guard Kelcie Namba.
