Oçahu's Ocean Safety personnel closed all beaches on the North Shore to recreational swimming on Christmas morning as waves with 30-foot faces were seen on the outer reefs. Ocean Safety was also encouraging people to stay out of the water on the West Side, where surf was in the 15-20 foot face range.

Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division issued the following report:
District 3 (North Shore)
Ocean Safety personnel have closed all beaches to recreational swimming. Surf is in the 20-25 foot face value range with the outer reefs seeing sets in the 30 foot+ face value range. There were no reports of property damage with only a few reports of water coming over Kamehameha Hwy at Laniakea, Chun's Reef and the Rockpiles area....however, all roads are open and passable with little or no debris on the roadway. The coastal erosion at Sunset Beach has NOT worsened with very little noticeable sand movement during the overnight hours.
District 4 (West Side)
Ocean Safety personnel are encouraging people to stay out of the water on the western shorelines. Surf is in the 15-20 foot face value range with some larger sets. There were no reports of property damage with only a few reports of water coming over Farrington Hwy near the Makaha 7-11...however, all roads are open and passable with little or no debris on the roadway.

Ocean Safety personnel reassessed the situation this morning and determined that shark warning signs did NOT need to be reposted.
The waters were cleared and shark warning signs were posted yesterday after lifeguards sighted a shark approximately 8 - 10 feet in length in near shore waters. The shark was displaying aggressive behavior as it was actively pursuing several turtles in the immediate area.
