Advertiser Staff

A man who appeared to be in his 50s died early Christmas morning in a drowning incident near West Loch Shoreline Community Park.

Emergency Medical Services released the following report about the incident:
Incident 1:
8:22 AM
91-000 Kapapapuhi St. (West Loch Shoreline Community Park)
EMS was activated and responded to the West Loch Shoreline Community Park for a possible near drowning. Upon arrival, HFD personnel had already retrieved the patient from near shore waters and were conducting CPR. Paramedics treated and transported the male patient in critical condition to a nearby hospital. The male patient who appeared to be in his 50’s was subsequently pronounced dead a short time later at the hospital.
The Honolulu Fire Department issued the following statement on the incident:
HFD units were dispatched to the West Loch area near the golf course shortly before 8:00 a.m. after a man who went crabbing earlier was reported missing by a relative. Arriving companies had some difficulty in determining the exact location of the pier where this man was last seen, so units converged on the scene from two sides where the pier was thought to be located. Once Air-1 arrived at the scene, its pilot spotted a man face down in the water offshore of the end of Kapapapuhi Street. A rescue specialist was inserted into the water near the victim. The rescue specialist then placed the man into a “Billy Pugh” net and the man was brought ashore at West Loch Shoreline Park where CPR was initiated until EMS arrived. Firefighters assisted EMS with continued CPR until their arrival at St. Francis West Hospital where his care was transferred to ER personnel at the medical facility.
The initial call came in at 7:52 a.m. HFD personnel had the man ashore at 8:26. EMS was at the scene at 8:35 a.m., and HFD’s rescue unit, Air-1, and the battalion chief made themselves available at about 9:00 a.m.
