A traditional kadomatsu, left. A paper fan decorated with a "tsuru," or crane, can be used as a decoration for kadomatsu. A free kadomatsu demonstration happens tomorrow at the Japanese Cultural Center.

Now that Christmas has passed, it's time to look ahead to the new year.

In partnership with Temari, the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i is helping out with a free demonstration and lecture on kadomatsu, with Temari's Ann Asakura and Merle Grybowski. It takes place from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. tomorrow in the JCCH Community Gallery. Visit www.jcch.com or call 945-7633 for more information.

Aiea Hongwanji Mission is hosting its annual mochitsuki (mochi pounding) tomorrow with rice steaming from 6 a.m. and pounding and rolling mochi from 8 to about 11:30 a.m. — or until the mochi runs out. The traditional event is open to the public at the mission, 99-186 Puakala St.
