Fatal moped crash Oahu's 54th traffic death of 2009

Advertiser Staff

A 36-year-old Wai'anae man was killed Monday night in a moped crash on Farrington Highway, fronting Wai'anae District Park.

Police said the man was traveling toward Honolulu on Farrington Highway about 10 p.m. when he lost control of the moped, veered into the curb on the right side of the road and was thrown from the moped.

The man, who was not wearing a helmet, hit a light pole and suffered severe head injuries, police said.

Paramedics took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said he was the 54th traffic fatality of the year on O'ahu, compared to 46 at the same time last year.

Police said no other vehicles were involved and that speed might have been a factor in the crash. They said they were still investigating whether alcohol might have played a role.
