Ultra-marathon runner and cancer survivor Paul Sibley will participate in the HURT 100-mile race to raise awareness for the Hawaii Children's Cancer Foundation on Jan. 16 in Makiki.

Sibley, whose friends signed a yellow jersey for him when he found out he had cancer, will be running this race in a jersey signed by more than two dozen local kids who have cancer. He is re-printing this shirt for others to purchase for the cause.

To get involved with Sibley's effort, go to his Web site at www.cancerrunner.org.

DRINK TO YOUR HEALTH

STAY HYDRATED TO WARD OFF SEASONAL BUGS

It's the season for parties and cheer — but also for catching colds, feeling tired and craving carbs, and this can have an impact on your overall health.

One protective strategy: Drink up. Getting plenty of water may help prevent viruses and bacteria from taking hold in your body once you've been exposed to them, says Dr. Riva Rahl, staff physician at the Cooper Clinic in Dallas. "The mucus in your nose is actually one of the key physical barriers that keeps germs out of your body. When you're not well hydrated, it dries up and doesn't provide that barrier," explains Rahl. Staying hydrated also helps your system distribute valuable nutrients while flushing out germs and toxins.
