Even with four starters missing because they are playing in the band at college football's Tostitos Fiesta Bowl in Arizona, the Moanalua boys soccer team beat host Roosevelt, 2-1, last night in O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red East Division play at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.

"We had to replace our whole defensive line," said Moanalua coach Spencer Machado, who was without defenders Nathan Gima, Travis Okahara and Ethan Chang, and midfielder Ken Fuyuki. "My whole backline ... we just had to get something going. They had to step up and they kept us in the game."

Statistically, entering yesterday's game Moanalua possessed the top-scoring offense (12 goals) and Roosevelt had the stingiest defense (three goals).

It was the fifth multiple-goal game for Nä Menehune (4-0-1) and the first time the Rough Riders (3-1-2) allowed more than one goal.

Nä Menehune scored twice in a three-minute span of the second half to overcome a 1-0 halftime deficit.

"We have some good shooters like Kelsey Tsutsui, he's always there on the ball," Machado said. "This game, we started a little rough in the first half, and got it together. Everybody can score on this team. It's just a matter of time. This game just took a little too long."

Junior midfielder Kouki Delfino scored for the Rough Riders in the 14th minute. Junior forward Dwayne Iwamoto set up the goal after crossing from the right flank following a counterattack on a Moanalua free kick.

The ball skipped past Moanalua defenders and Roosevelt attackers to the far, left end of the 18-yard box, where Delfino put it away with one touch in the 14th minute.

Tsutsui, a senior midfielder, tied it in the 61st minute after using his head to flick the ball past Roosevelt goalkeeper Jay Tsuruoka off a free kick from near midfield by sophomore defender Lee Arakawa.

Two minutes later, Myun Jun Ko put Moanalua ahead when the ball bounced around the 18-yard box after a corner kick and Ko touched it into the right corner of the goal.

"It wasn't really a letdown," Roosevelt coach Ed Ota said. "We talked to them at halftime about not letting up and to just keep playing, but for some reason ... I don't know what they did."
