Mural of NC State basketball coach Kay Yow defaced

Associated Press

RALEIGH, N.C. — A mural painted in N.C. State University's Free Expression Tunnel to honor women's basketball coach Kay Yow, who died last week after a long struggle with breast cancer, has been defaced.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported that on Saturday, a blue mustache was painted on the portrait along with profanity.

Campus police were monitoring the tunnel on Sunday.

The tunnel became a lightning rod for controversy late last year after threatening graffiti directed toward then President-elect Barack Obama was found in the tunnel. The incident rallied the North Carolina chapter of the NAACP, which called for expulsion of the four students responsible, and prompted the University of North Carolina system to revisit student codes of conduct as related to hate crimes.
