CFB: Former New Mexico St. coach says he has cancer

Associated Press

LEXINGTON, Ky. — A published report says former University of Kentucky football coach Hal Mumme has revealed he has prostate cancer.

The Lexington Herald-Leader quoted Mumme saying he felt ill during fall camp at New Mexico State, where he was fired in December.

Mumme told the newspaper tests done at the UK Markey Cancer Center revealed the cancer and said his prognosis is good because the illness was detected early.

A news release from the hospital said Mumme would make a formal announcement on Tuesday about being treated.

Mumme served as head coach at UK from 1997-2000 and his teams compiled a 20-26 record.

He left amid a recruiting scandal that concluded with UK's football program being placed on probation by the NCAA.
