Aiona leads money race for 2010 governor's seat

Associated Press

Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona and Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann appear to have a good start in campaign funding for the 2010 gubernatorial race.

Aiona, a Republican, had more than $760,000 on hand at the end of December, according to reports filed to the state Campaign Spending Commission.

Hannemann, a potential Democratic candidate for governor or a U.S. House seat, had $660,000 in mayoral campaign funds as of Dec. 31. He can transfer that into a gubernatorial campaign committee if he decides to run for the state's top job, but it cannot be used for a federal campaign.

The wild card is Democratic U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie, who had $1.1 million as of December. The commission is reviewing whether he can use that money in a gubernatorial campaign.
