Online reservations available for Haleakala cabins

The Maui News

HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK - Online reservations for Haleakala National Park's three wilderness cabins are now available 24 hours a day, The Maui News reported today.

The service is available via a Web site operated in partnership with the Friends of Haleakala National Park. Volunteer Matt Wordeman created the Web site and reservation pages, which are on a secure server and administered by National Park Service staff.

Reservations can be made by going directly to the site at fhnp.org/wcr, or following the links on the park's Web page at www.nps.gov/hale/planyourvisit/wilderness-cabins.htm.

Reservations can also be taken by phone between 1 and 3 p.m. at 572-4400.

Cabin reservation details include:

* Reservations can be made 90 days in advance.

* Cabins are $75 per night and accommodate up to 12 people.

* All campers must register at the park headquarters building before entering the crater.

* A refund is granted if a reservation is canceled more than three weeks before a scheduled stay. (There is, however, a $10 handling fee per cabin for refunds or changes to reservations.)

* Reservations made within three weeks of a scheduled stay cost $60 per night. (No refunds.)
