A man riding a moped died Tuesday after he ran into the back of a Nissan Pathfinder on Ali'i Drive fronting Magic Sands Beach in Keauhou.

Emergency responders arrived at the crash scene about 3:15 p.m. to find the 20-year-old Kailua, Kona, man with severe head injuries. He was pronounced dead at Kona Community Hospital at 4:30 p.m. He had not been wearing a helmet.

The three occupants of the Pathfinder were not injured, officials said.

It was the third traffic fatality on the Big Island, comapred with four at this time last year.
