Pohoiki boat ramp to be closed through March 4

Advertiser Staff

The Pohoiki Boat Ramp and loading dock will be closed until March 4 to allow construction of replacement facilities. In the meantime, boaters should use Wailoa Small Boat Harbor in Hilo, according to the Department of Land and Natural Resources.

The $965,000 project involves demolition of the existing concrete boat ramp, loading dock and access, and construction of a new ramp and loading dock. Contractor Kaikor Construction also will build a rock revetment along the north side of the launch ramp and adjacent sloped area, and install plastic fenders and rubber bumpers.

DLNR officials said the contractor will protect water quality and mitigate other construction impacts by erecting silt fences and curtains, dust screens, a graveled entrance and wash-down basin.

The project is expected to be completed by June.
