Collins new San Diego State coach

Advertiser Staff

Deitre Collins-Parker, one of the most decorated athletes in University of Hawai'i history, is the new head coach at San Diego State.

Collins-Parker, who led the Rainbow Wahine to NCAA championships in 1982 and '83, coached at Cornell the last five years. She guided the Big Red to three Ivy League titles and two NCAA appearances. Collins was also head coach at UNLV for eight seasons.

Collins was a three-time All-American at UH, and the first volleyball player to win the Broderick Cup, awarded to the country's best female college athlete. She started for the 1988 Olympic team and was an alternate in 1992. She returned to UH to finish her degree in 1995.

More recently, she was one of six named to the NCAA's 25th anniversary team, inducted into the AVCA Hall of Fame and received the NCAA Silver Anniversary Award last month. That award honors those with exceptional collegiate careers who have gone on to excel in their professions, on the 25th anniversary of completing their athletic eligibility.

Collins, who grew up in California, married Dale Parker about the time she moved to Cornell. He is in his fourth season as assistant coach for the Cornell women's basketball team.

Aven Lee, a Kamehameha graduate who played for Hawai'i in the late '90s, is now an assistant coach for former UH associate Charlie Wade at Pacific. Jennifer Carey, a UH setter from 1999 to 2002, is the new director of volleyball operations at Cal. Carey left her position as assistant coach at Georgia Tech. The Golden Bears play in Hawai'i this fall.
