Ill camper airlifted from Kalalau Valley

Advertiser Staff

A 35-year-old female visitor who was ill and unable to hike out of Kalalau Valley on her own was airlifted out yesterday by a Kauai Fire Department helicopter.

The woman is in stable condition at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital.

She and her husband had been camping in Kalalau for 10 days and she became ill after drinking stream water.

The husband escorted his wife to the helicopter landing zone in the valley and then hiked approximately 11 miles to the trailhead.

He called police dispatch at around 2:07 pm and reported that his wife was sick and needed assistance getting out of the valley.

Air-1 and two rescue specialists from the Lihue fire station responded to the call.

They picked up the woman at the landing zone and brought her to Waimea Canyon School Park. From there firefighters from the Waimea fire station escorted her to the hospital.
