PORTLAND, Ore. — A Hawaiian Airlines flight from Maui to Portland with about 200 passengers lost power in one engine, but it landed safely last night at Portland International Airport.

Airline officials said an electronic flight controller failed over the Pacific Ocean, causing an engine to power down, and the pilot descended to fly more safely.

The plane was about 30 minutes from Portland when the engine powered down.

Passenger Robin Gordon of Beaverton told KGW-TV in Portland that there was a collective gasp when the pilot told passengers what happened — and then applause when the safe landing was made just after 11 p.m.

"He just said it so calmly. We were going, 'Did you hear what he said?' We were just sitting there digesting it. When the plane finally did land, there was a large applause and lots of couples kissing and thankful that they were down and he landed it quite safely," she said.
