Sumo legend Konishiki and his wife Taupou share the enchanting sounds of the 'ukulele at the 1st Annual Japan-Hawaii Ukulele Picnic 2009. The festival is aimed at gathering people to play and enjoy 'ukulele music together in a casual picnic setting. Similar festivities in Japan, where Konishiki and his wife live, have been extremely popular.

Island-favorite Pepper, a rock band with its roots in Kailua, Kona, returns for a three-island tour. The group, famous for "Dirty Hot Sex," is now based in Southern California. Band members are Kaleo Wassman on vocals and guitar, Bret Bollinger on vocals and bass and Yesod Williams on drums.

Ballet Hawaii presents Alonzo King's "Lines Ballet" from San Francisco. "Lines," founded in 1982 by King, is coming "home," since he was a member of the Honolulu City Ballet in the mid-1970s, a company that morphed into the Ballet Hawaii organization.

Presented by the Army Community Theatre, the musical comedy whodunit "Curtains" is making its Hawai'i debut at Richardson Theatre. It's a story of a police lieutenant who arrives at Boston's Colonial Theatre in 1959 to investigate the death of the leading lady, then gets drawn into making a hit show as he solves the murder.
