Get into the loving mood on Valentine's Day — for Mother Earth, that is. But first, make sure you're feeling fit and want to take part in a service project that makes a popular trail fit as a fiddle, too. Join the crew taking an hourlong — and often muddy and moderately difficult — hike up Manoa Cliffs Trail to pull up and hack down invasive plants. Meet at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Church of the Crossroads parking lot; the work continues until 3 p.m. It's sponsored by the O'ahu Invasive Species Committee. Bring rain jacket, gloves, long pants, walking shoes, lunch, snacks and water; 286-4616.

HELP US FIND HEMP SHOWER CURTAINS

We've been hearing a lot about hemp shower curtains, which repel mildew and don't emit toxins or add to the plastic on the Earth, but finding them was another matter. No dice at Whole Foods, Down to Earth or 'Umeke Market — and one online place told us they didn't ship to Hawai'i. If you know where on O'ahu a hemp shower curtain might be had, call Mary Kaye Ritz: 525-8035.

SAVE THE PLANET

NO PLASTICS SAFE FROM MICROWAVE

Are plastics safe fresh from the microwave? Even "microwave-safe" No. 7 plastic containers can release chemicals — especially when heated, reports the National Geographics Green Guide. It's best to use glass or ceramic containers, which can also go in the dishwasher.
