Weather: Showers expected today, tonight

A light to moderate southeasterly wind flow will continue across the area through tonight as a weather system slowly passes to the north.

Trades are expected to increase and become quite strong during the second half of the work week and into the weekend as a high-pressure ridge to the north strengthens.

Meanwhile, a winter weather advisory has been issued for the Big Island summits for this afternoon. Expected afternoon showers with possible thunderstorms will bring snow down to about 11000 feet this afternoon. Accumulations will be mainly on the light side with local amounts of 1 to 2 inches possible.

Here's how the weather looks at this point for the middle of the week:

Today: Isolated showers after noon. Partly cloudy, with a high near 79. Northeast wind 6 to 8 mph becoming southeast. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Tonight: Isolated showers. Partly cloudy, with a low around 66. Light northeast wind. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Wednesday: Isolated showers. Partly cloudy, with a high near 79. East wind between 7 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Wednesday Night: Scattered showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 65. East wind between 11 and 13 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Thursday: Isolated showers after noon. Partly cloudy, with a high near 79. East wind between 14 and 17 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Thursday Night: Scattered showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 70. East wind around 18 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
