Port Royal discharged 5,000 gallons of raw sewage

The Navy warship Port Royal discharged about 5,000 gallons of raw sewage sometime between Saturday night and Sunday morning, the state Department of Health's Clean Water Branch said today in a news release.

The public is being advised to stay out of waters fronting the reef runway from the Keehi Channel to the Pearl Harbor channel. The area is a popular diving area for tako.

Watson Okubo, Monitoring & Analysis Section Chief, said no official notification was given to the Department of Health, even though two DOH staff person attended a meeting Saturday afternoon at Pearl Harbor.

Okubo said his office confirmed the discharge this morning.
