Police arrest teen who drove off with baby

Advertiser Staff

Police tonight arrested a 13- or 14-year-old girl who allegedly stole a car in Makiki with a 1-month-old infant in the back seat.

The incident began shortly after 7:30 p.m. when a 1997 black Dodge Stratus was taken near an auto dealership on Beretania Street. The car was last seen heading east on Ke'eaumoku Street.

Police issued an all-points bulletin after learning that an infant was in the stolen vehicle. Officers scoured the downtown area for more than two hours before they captured the girl in the Liliha area, said police spokesman Maj. Frank Fujii.

The baby was unharmed, he said. The girl was booked on a charge of auto theft.

Fujii said the girl and the owner of the car may be related. Fujii also said that the girl may not have known that the baby was in the car when she took it.
