The board of directors of North Hawaii Community Hospital is hiring John White, chief executive officer of Samaritan Healthcare in Washington state, as its new chief executive.

White will assume duties at the 40-bed hospital in Waimea on April 15. White joined Samaritan in 2004 and is credited with helping the 50-bed hospital achieve better quality ratings and financial results, North Hawaii Community Hospital said.

The hospital said White's selection was unanimously endorsed by its board. He will take over from Ron Vigus, who has served as interim chief executive at the facility since July 2008.

In December, the hospital elected a new board of directors as it worked to heal a rift with the community after layoffs earlier in the year. In August, the hospital laid off 59 employees, or about 13 percent of its staff, because of financial difficulties.

A&B FOUNDATION DONATED $2.1M IN '08

The Alexander & Baldwin Foundation donated $2.1 million last year to nonprofit organizations in Hawai'i and on the Mainland.

The majority of the giving — $1.7 million — went to charities serving a broad range of community needs in Hawai'i and the Pacific Islands. The A&B Foundation donated an additional $400,000 to charities on the Mainland.

The A&B Foundation also encouraged the generosity of its employees through matching gift programs, which doubled nearly $100,000 of personal donations to charities in Hawai'i and on the Mainland.

"Our communities need support now more than ever, and A&B is pleased to help provide that support," said A&B Chairman and CEO Allen Doane, who also serves on the A&B Foundation's Hawai'i Committee.

On Maui, the foundation's grants helped build shelters for domestic abuse victims and their children, put a new roof on the Paia Youth Center and put school supplies in the backpacks of needy children.
