Speakers to tout value of higher education

More than 450 high school students from Nanakuli, Wai'anae and Kapolei high and intermediate schools will attend an all-day education conference at the JW Marriott Ihilani Resort and Spa tomorrow that will feature talks from Mayor Mufi Hannemann, Dr. Maya Soetoro-Ng and former University of Hawai'i quarterback Colt Brennan.

The purpose of the conference is to instill in the youths the importance of higher education, assist them with career and college goals, and provide resources for them to achieve these goals. A college fair, college counseling, community and financial aid resources will also be available.

The conference is hosted by the nonprofit group Making Dreams Come True, Valley of Rainbows, which supports initiatives for Leeward Coast youths through financial awards and programs. Since 2000, 1,702 youths have received $127,807 in awards.
