Saint Louis senior Lucas Gonsalves capped off an eventful four-day span by scoring 23 points last night as the Crusaders held off a late Punahou rally to win, 53-50, in Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys basketball action.

A home crowd of about 550 at McCabe Gym watched Saint Louis — ranked No. 7 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media — improve to 5-3 in ILH play in its regular-season home finale.

Punahou, ranked No. 5 but playing without starting guard Dalton Hilliard and forward Henry Cassiday, fell to 4-4.

"I was feeling it tonight; I think those were my first 3-pointers all year," said Gonsalves, a 5-foot-9 guard who drained four baskets from beyond the arc. "With us, it's just the emotion, feeling the tempo."

The Crusaders were upset by Mid-Pacific on Saturday, then Gonsalves made a verbal commitment to play football and baseball for Western Oregon University.

Last night, Saint Louis fell behind 11-6 in the first period but eventually took the lead and was up, 33-28 at halftime.

After trailing 43-31 midway through the third period, the Buffanblu rallied in the fourth and took a 50-49 lead on Josh Taylor's jumper with 1:45 remaining. But Dean Viena answered with a layup with 1:17 left and Punahou lost control of the ball on a jump-shot attempt just inside the free throw-line with about 10 seconds remaining.

The Crusaders gained possession and Micah McClinton sank two free throws with three ticks left. McClinton then intercepted the ensuing inbounds pass near halfcourt to seal the victory.

"We had to take advantage of this opportunity, especially against a good team like Punahou," said Dwight Moniz, Saint Louis' first-year coach. "We tend to have mental lapses, but our kids will always play hard."

Viena added 10 points for the Crusaders. Taylor led the Buffanblu with 14 points.

Cassiday is out with a tooth injury and Hilliard was held out due to undisclosed reasons, Punahou coach Dan Hale said.
