Tennis: Jankovic reaches quarterfinals in Paris

By TRUNG LATIEULE
Associated Press Writer

PARIS — Third-ranked Jelena Jankovic defeated Li Na of China 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 today to advance to the quarterfinals of the Open GDF Suez.

Jankovic had lost four matches to the 28th-ranked Li on hard courts.

"There are certain players who give you a hard time no matter what their ranking is," Jankovic said. "It's just their game and their style of play that doesn't kind of suit mine. I kept hitting the ball very deep and very hard and I took the initiative."

Jankovic will face Alize Cornet of France, who rallied past Daniela Hantuchova 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Cornet, who had an inflamed right shoulder tendon last week, won despite landing only 39 percent of her first serves.

"It's not painful, but that sensation bothers me a bit," Cornet said. "I served with confidence only in the third set."

Hantuchova, whose 2008 season was marred by a foot injury, could not hold serve in the third set.

Serena Williams was scheduled to play Croatian qualifier Karolina Sprem later Thursday.
