Services set for Rev. Jack Newton

The Rev. John "Jack" Newton, 85, died Friday.

The only son of John and Louise Newton in Long Island, N.Y., he served in the U.S. Navy and later became a priest and chaplain.

After retiring in 1983 after 27 years as a chaplain, he preached in parishes all over Oahu, saying Mass until about a year and a half ago. He was also the Port Chaplain for the Diocese of Honolulu until recently.

He's survived by sister Hazel Barr, Visitation will be 9:30-11 a.m. next Thursday at the St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Enchanted Lake. Mass will be at 11 a.m. Burial at sea by the U.S. Navy at a later date.
