MLB: Former Yankee Jim Leyritz booked into jail

Associated Press

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Authorities say former major leaguer Jim Leyritz drank alcohol while awaiting trial on charges that he killed a woman in a drunken driving accident and has been jailed.

The former New York Yankee World Series star had his bail revoked Friday and he was taken to the Broward County jail in Florida.

Prosecutors say a system in Leyritz's car that he has to blow in before starting it recorded that he has consumed alcohol several times since his release.

Police say Leyritz was drunk when he ran a red light in December 2007 and crashed into another car, killing a woman.

As a condition of his release ahead of trial, Leyritz is not allowed to consume alcohol.

His attorney did not immediately respond to e-mails and telephone messages.
