University of Hawai'i football player JoPierre Davis was arrested yesterday at the school in connection with the sexual assault of a woman and beating of that woman and a man.

Davis, a backup cornerback with a year of eligibility remaining, was booked on one count of second-degree sexual assault, two counts of fourth-degree sexual assault, one count each of second- and third-degree assault, burglary and third-degree promotion of a detrimental drug. He remained in the cellblock at the main police station pending charges.

Although he has yet to be charged, Davis has been suspended from the team for violating the school's Code of Conduct, a UH spokesman said.

"Per the Student-Athlete Handbook, the player was immediately suspended for an indefinite period. He is suspended from participating in all (team-related) activities," said UH athletic director Jim Donovan.

UH football coach Greg McMackin said Davis is "suspended indefinitely."

But McMackin said Davis will remain on scholarship until an investigation is completed.

Davis was arrested just before noon yesterday on campus. He was being sought in connection with the Sept. 28 sexual assault of a 20-year-old woman and the Jan. 19 beating of the woman and a 26-year-old man.

In the first incident, the woman told police that a man entered her University area residence and sexually assaulted her. Police said the incident occurred between 2:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. Sept. 28, the morning after the Warriors lost a home game to San Jose State.

On Jan. 19, the woman and a man reported being assaulted in Waikiki. The extent of their injuries was not available.

When Davis was arrested yesterday, police recovered an unspecified drug on him.

Davis, a 6-foot senior from San Francisco, played in all 14 games for the Warriors in 2008. He was the "gunner" on punts, where his job was to race down on punt coverage and either tackle or down the punt.

He made a total of five tackles, four unassisted in 2008.

Nicknamed "J.P.," Davis was signed as a running back, but moved to defensive back as a sophomore in 2007.

He was a redshirt in 2005, saw action in two games in 2006 and appeared in 11 games, mainly on special teams and as a backup cornerback in 2007. He returned an interception for a score against New Mexico State in 2007.

BESS TO HELP INSTRUCT AT SPEED CLINIC SUNDAY

Former University of Hawai'i football player Davone Bess will be a guest instructor at Sunday's Hawai'i Speed and Quickness clinic in UH's Klum Gym.

As a Miami Dolphins receiver this past season, Bess was third among NFL rookies with 54 receptions. (Denver's Eddie Royal had 91 catches and Philadelphia's DeSean Jackson 62.)

There are sessions tomorrow and Sunday, each running from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.

The cost is $10 per session. Each participant receives meal coupons.
