More details on Damien sainthood

Some updated information has come through on the Father Damien sainthood front:

• The Mass of Thanksgiving on Feb. 21 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace has been rescheduled to 6 p.m. because of a conflict with a funeral.

• A Mass of Thanksgiving will be Feb. 22 at Kalaupapa.

• Because Rome follows Daylight Saving Time, the time difference between Rome and Honolulu is now 11 hours. That changes in March, so when the announcement in Rome comes after the 11 a.m. consistory that will include Bishop Larry Silva, it will be after midnight, Hawai'i time.

FREE WORKSHOP ON 'FINAL RIGHTS'

Doug Smith will lead a four-hour workshop, "Final Rights: Caring for People in the Final Phases of Life," at 4 p.m. March 3 at the Shinnyo En Temple, Hale Hauoli Hall, 2348 S. Beretania St.

Smith is the author of several books, including "Caregiving: Hospice-Proven Techniques for Healing Body and Soul," "The Complete Book of Counseling the Dying and Grieving," "Being a Wounded Healer," and "The Tao Of Dying."

Presented by St. Francis Hospice, the free workshop covers the right to be in control; the right to have a sense of purpose; the right to touch and be touched; the right to have one's beliefs and values respected; the right to hear the truth; the right to be in denial; the right to reminisce; and the right to laugh.

Information: St. Francis Hospice, 595-7566.

BIBLICAL SOCIETY SEEKS VOLUNTEERS

The Los Angeles Times is reporting that the Biblical Archaeology Society has listed more than 20 excavation projects needing volunteers this summer.

Costs — not including airfare — range from free (the Temple Mount sifting project in Jerusalem), to $500 per week at Tiberias in the Galilee region that includes lodgings, the report said, noting that dig sites currently listed include destinations in Israel, Jordan, Spain, Italy and Greece.
