Punahou's Christel Simms set a meet record in qualifying for the 100-yard backstroke yesterday in the Local Motion Swimming and Diving State Championships at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

Simms finished in 56.34 to break the previous mark of 56.51 set by Punahou's Rachel Cote last year.

The finals are scheduled to start today at 1 p.m. at CORP.

Simms, who swam for the Philippines at the Beijing Olympics, also was the top qualifier in the 100 butterfly. She finished the event in 57.34.

The senior also holds state meet records in the 100 freestyle (50.15) and 200 freestyle (1:49.25). She also is a member of two state meet record relay teams: 200 medley (1:44.03) and 200 freestyle (1:35.43).
